0px;">폴란드 북부 발트해 연안에 있는 작은 항구 도시. 14세기에 한자동맹에 가입한 뒤 유럽 대륙 동북부 최고의 항구로 이름을 떨쳤던 곳이다. 중세와 르네상스 시대를 거치며 번영 일로를 달렸고, 그 모습을 구시가에 아름답게 간직하고 있었다. 폴란드의 많은 도시들이 그러하듯 그단스크도 2차대전때 대부분이 파괴되었다. 현재의 모습은 1950년대와 60년대를 거쳐 복원된 것. 여기서 재미있는 사실 하나. 그단스크는 한때 독일의 영토였던 적도 있었기에 여기저기 독일 문화의 흔적이 적지 않게 남아있었는데, 폴란드 정부는 파괴된 그단스크 구시가를 전쟁 전 모습으로 복원하며 독일의 기운이 1g이라도 보이는 것은 싹 무너뜨려버렸다고 한다. 나치 독일이 얼마나 징글징글했으면 그랬을까 0px;">그단스크는 한국인 여행자들이 잘 들르지 않는 곳이다. 내가 여행할 때는 동양인이 거의 없었을 뿐더러 아예 폴란드 바깥 사람들 자체가 많아보이지 않았다. 사실 여행의 관점으로 보면 위치가 어지간히 애매하다. 크라쿠프에서도, 바르샤바에서도, 브로츠와프에서도 다 멀다. 폴란드의 도로망 기차망은 유럽 전체에서도 가장 낙후된 수준이니 남의나라에서는 더더욱 오가기 쉽지 않다. 그래도 이 도시를 찾는 방문객 수가 연간 수백만에 달한단다. 폴란드 국내는 물론 유럽에서는 폴란드에서 가장 아름다운 도시를 꼽으라면 수도인 바르샤바나 최고의 관광도시 크라쿠프를 제치고 그단스크를 꼽는 사람들이 적지 않다고 한다.<br><br>나는 2011년 동유럽 장기여행 중에 그단스크를 만났다 . 폴란드 포즈난의 친구 집에 여행 백수 신분으로 길게 머물던 중 예전부터 염두에 두고 있던 그단스크로 떠나게 되었다. 그단스크에서 페리를 타고 에스토니아의 탈린으로 넘어가 그곳에서 발트 3국을 거쳐 육로를 따라 폴란드로 귀환하려는 장대한 계획이었다. 그 여정의 시작이었던 그단스크는 생각보다 훨씬 아름다운 도시였다. 나는 구시가의 여행사에서 탈린으로 가는 페리에 대해 물어본 뒤 숙소로 돌아왔고, 휴대폰을 변기 물통 위에 올려두고 샤워를 했다. 변기 물통에는 미묘한 경사가 져 있었고, <br><br>.....나의 휴대폰은 서서히 미끄러져 결국 변기통 안으로 다이빙을 하고 말았다. 나는 당시 구입한지 이제 석달째에 접어들고 있었던 아이폰4를 익사 직전에 구출하여 발트 3국이고 나발이고 다 포기한 채 포즈난의 친구집으로 돌아갔다. 이 정도 되면 0px;"><br>크로아티아는 한정식 상차림 같은 여행을 하게 되는 곳이다. 일품 요리를 먹는 것 처럼 일주일이고 열흘이고 진득하게 머무는 여행을 하기는 힘들다. 규모가 작은 도시나 마을들을 짧게짧게 머물며 한입씩 한입씩 그 맛을 즐기는 게 제격이다. 해안선을 따라 작고 예쁜 중세풍 소도시들이 줄지어 자리하고 있는 중부 달마티아 지역은 작고 개성있는 반찬들이 종지에 담겨 옹기종기 담겨있는 것을 연상시키는데, 프리모슈텐은 그중에서도 가장 작은 종지에 담긴, 그러나 가장 잊을 수 없는 맛을 내는 특별한 한입이다.<br><br>프리모슈텐은 중부 달마티아의 한 가운데 쯤에 동그마니 자리한 작은 마을이다. 원래는 작은 섬이었는데 16세기에 육지와 연결되는 둑길을 놓아 지금은 물방울 모양의 육계도가 되어있다.  마을로 들어가는 입구 부근의 언덕 위에서 보면 이제 태어난지 17개월 됐는데 먹기는 어른만큼 먹는 우리 조카 배처럼 봉실하니 도독한 마을의 모양이 한눈에 들어온다. <br><br>마을의 구성성분은 몹시 소박하다. 섬 언덕 한가운데 자리한 교회를 중심으로 작고 예쁜 중세 마을이 형성되어 있고, 마을 북쪽으로 넓은 자갈 해변이 펼쳐져있다. 석회암으로 지어진 0px;">체스키 크룸로프는 체코 남부에 자리하고 있는 작은 마을이다. 이곳이 처음으로 도시꼴을 갖추기 시작한 것은 13세기 말엽. 지금은 사행천과 숲에 둘러싸인 조용한 마을이 되었지만, 칠팔백년전의 이곳은 유럽 서부와 보헤미아를 잇던 중요한 상업로였다. 그 이후 여러 왕족 및 귀족들이 지배하며 17세기까지 조용한 평화와 번영을 누려왔다. 나치독일의 지배를 받긴 했지만 전란의 포화는 천행으로 피해갈 수 있었다. 그후 체코가 슬로바키아와 병합하여 공산화 되며 모두의 기억에서 잊혀져가다가, 체코가 분리 독립하며 자유화의 길을 걸은 뒤 체스키 크룸로프도 숲속에 감춰두었던 아름다운 모습을 세계 만방에 떨치게 되었다.  전쟁의 피해를 입지 않은 상태로 중세와 르네상스, 바로크의 흔적을 온 마을에 또렷이 아로새기고 있는 터라 역사적인 보존가치도 아주 높다. 이런 곳은 유네스코에서 가만히 두질 않는다. 그리하여 마을 전체가 유네스코 문화유산으로 지정되어 있다. <br><br>마을 한가운데 우뚝 선 체스키 크룸로프 성을 중심으로 마을의 골목과 굽이치는 블타바 강변을 걷노라면 감탄사가 절로 나온다. '보헤미아'라는 단어에서 연상되는 모든 낭만적이고 동화적인 이미지를 죄다 꺼내다가 마을로 구현해놓은 모습이다. 이런 모습을 배신하지 않는 것이 또 이 동네의 전설들. 악마에게 영혼을 판 사나이, 집시 소녀와 슬픈 사랑에 빠진 청년, 영주의 망나니 아들과 결혼했다 비극적 최후를 맞은 여인의 전설 등등이 있다. 사람사는 동네 같아 보이지 않지만, 분명히 사람들은 살고 있다. 이 동네에서 슈퍼마켓하는 베트남 아저씨께 들은 얘긴데, 밤에는 소매치기도 있단다. 체코에서 베트남 사람을 만나면 어떤 언어로 대화하냐고? 답은 한국어. 아저씨 한국에서 8년 살다가 체코 가셨단다. <br><br></p></div></div></div></div></div></div> <div class="se_component 0px;">이탈리아 중부 토스카나 지방을 여행할 때면 언제나 미묘하게 괴로워지곤 한다. 어떤 종류의 괴로움이냐면, 블랙 프라이데이 때 아마존을 들여다본다거나, 다이어트 끝물에 동네 배달 전단지를 들여다볼 때 느끼는 그 감정이다. 내 인생과 지갑이 무한하기만 하다면 다 갖고 다 먹고 싶지만, 그럴 수 없으므로 무언가를 골라야할 때, 그러나 고르기 무지하니 힘들때 느끼는 그 괴로움. <br><br>그만큼 토스카나에는 예쁜 동네들이 많다. 토스카나의 대장 피렌체를 위시하여 시엔나, 아레초, 리보르노, 산지미냐노, 피사, 루카, 산지미냐뇨, 몬탈치노, 앙기아리, 포피... 이름을 다 읊는 것만으로도 벅찰 정도다. 여기서 살짝 밑으로 내려가 움브리아 지방까지 포함하면 아씨시며 오르비에토며 페루자 등등까지 언급할 수 있지만 그렇게까지 일을 크게 벌이지는 않으려고 한다. <br><br>토스카나를 비롯한 이탈리아 중부의 작은 동네들은 대충 비슷비슷한 유전자를 공유하고 있다. 그다지 가파르지 않은 언덕, 흙의 붉은 질감이 살아있는 작은 중세 마을, 그리고 언덕을 둘러싼 포도밭과 해바라기밭, 그리고 올리브 숲. 이러한 공통 분모아래 마을마다 각자 빛나는 개성이나 특별한 볼거리가 하나둘씩 존재한다.<br><br>몬테풀치아노는 두 가지로 유명하다. 우선은 마을의 생김새와 디테일. 토스카나의 여러 중세마을 중에서도 마을의 생김새와 주변 경관이 유난히 아름답다. 그야말로 중세로 타임워프 온 기분이 들 정도다. 영화 <트와일라이트 : 뉴 문>에서 괜히 로케지로 선택한 것이 아니다.  그런데 그렇게 중세와 르네상스에서 고스란히 0px;">그리고 두번째면서 진짜 중요한 것. 몬테풀치아노는 이탈리아에서도 손꼽히는 와인의 고장이다. 아마 와인 좀 마시는 사람이라면 몬테풀치아노 와인을  잘 알고 있을 거다. 몬테풀치아노 마을에는 와인 생산자들이 와이너리 숍을 열고 방문자에게 아낌없는 견학과 시음의 기회를 열어주고 있다. 마을을 한바퀴 돌며 여기 저기서 한잔씩 얻어마시다 보면 취기가 돌 정도. 아울러 몬테풀치아노는 치즈, 특히 양젖으로 만든 경성치즈인 페코리노 치즈로도 유명하다. 질좋은 돼지고기와 꿀, 올리브유도 생산된다. 레스토랑들도 정말 저렴하고 맛있다. 사실 몬테풀치아노를 여기다 꼽은 이유가 예뻐서인지 맛있어서인지 나도 잘 모르니까 묻지 마라.</p></div></div></div></div></div></div> <div 0px;">할슈타트를 여행하는 건 시작부터 끝까지 완벽한 서사를 이룬다. 할슈타트 기차 역 앞 선착장 건너편으로 물안개에 싸인 마을이 보인다. 그 마을로 다가가는 방법은 바로 조그마한 연락선. 배를 타고 마을로 향하고 있노라면 선착장이라는 현실에서, 배라는 잠을 타고, 할슈타트라는 꿈으로 건너가는 기분이 든다. 거울 면처럼 매끄러운 호수, 사방을 둘러싼 고요한 산. 낮게 깔린 물안개, 그 안에 자리잡은 마을.  '고즈넉'이라는 단어가 마을로 현신한 듯한 동네. 동화 속에서 조차 본일 없을 정도로 아련한 그 모습. <br><br>배에서 내려 마을을 거닌다. 가끔 지나가는 단체 관광객들을 제외하면 변변한 소음조차 없다. 귀를 기울이면 물안개 피어오르는 소리나 해가 산마루에 부딪히는 소리를 들을 수 있을 것만 같다. 평범하게 호수와 언덕을 거닐다 보면 잘츠카머구트가 깊숙이 감춰놓은 아름다운 꿈속을 엿보는 기분이 든다. 그리고 밤이 무르익으면, 하늘 가득하게 별이 판을 깐다. 누군가 마구 흩뿌려놓은 것 같은. 손을 내밀면 묻어날 것 처럼.<br><br>그리고 다음날 이른 아침, 할슈타트가 간직한 절정의 순간이 다가온다. 어느 계절이든 어느 순간이든 아름답지 않은 0px;">고백컨대 나는 이 마을을 2006년, 그러니까 지금으로부터 9년전에 가보고 그 후로는 가보지 못했다. 영국은 그 후로도 몇 차례 더 갔지만, 이 동네까지는 엄두가 안나서 못갔다. 2006년에 여행할 때 중간 경유지에서 이 동네로 들어가는 버스가 하루 두 대 다니는 것을  보고, 그나마 그것이 끊겨서 택시를 타고 가는 기염을 토한 것이 트라우마로 남았다. 렌트를 하면 쉽게 해결될 문제지만 나는 운전을 못한다.<br><br>바이버리는 코츠월드에 속한 작은 마을 중 하나이다. 코츠월드는 잉글랜드 남부의 넓은 구릉지로서, 이곳에는 바이버리를 비롯하여 산업혁명 이전 영국의 모습을 고스란히 간직한 작은 마을들이 여러 개 있는 것으로 유명하다. 이 지역이 옛 모습을 간직하게 된 이유가 다름아닌 교통이 나빠서라고 한다. 좀더 제대로 말하자면 영국이 산업혁명으로 들끓으며 오만군데 철도가 놓이고 도로가 뚫리는 와중에도, 양이나 치고 밀이나 기르며 유유자적 살던 코츠월드 지역은 산업적 가치가 없다는 이유로 아무 문명의 혜택도 받지 못했다고. 그러나, 그러든 말든, 이 지역 사람들은 선조가 물려준 몇백년된 집을 깨끗하게 가꾸고 부모와 조부모에게 물려받은 방식대로 농사를 짓고 양을 치고 냇가에서 고기를 잡으며 조용하게 살아갔다. 그렇게 코츠월드는 18세기 이전에 시계바늘을 멈춘채 지금까지 유유자적 살아가고 있다. 관광객들이 오든 말든, 세상 어느 잡지며 인터넷에서 자기들을 소개하든 말든.</p></div></div></div></div></div></div> <div class="se_component 0px;">바이버리는 17세기에 지어진 돌집들이 줄지어 있는 모습으로 유명하다. 이 모습을 두고 19세기의 어느 예술가가 '단언컨대 바이버리는 잉글랜드에서 가장 아름다운 마을입니다'라고 했고, 그것이 지금까지 바이버리를 수식하는 문장이 되었다. 그리고 단언컨대는 그냥 내 드립이니까 빼고 생각해주시길 바란다. 이 정도로 유명한 관광지라면 동네의 모든 돌집들이 기념품숍이나 펜션, 하다못해 에어비앤비라도 되어야 맞을것 같은데, 이 동네의 집들은 아직까지도 대부분  그냥 주민들이 거주하는 용도로 쓰이고 있다고 한다. <br><br>지금 이 글을 쓰기 위해 바이버리 교통편을 찾아봤는데, 9년 전과는 달리 꽤 버스 편도 늘고 루트 옵션도 다양해진듯 하다. 다음에 영국을 간다면 한번 들러봐야겠다는 생각이 든다. 다른건 0px;">슬로베니아의 수도 류블랴나에서 이 곳으로 이동하겠다고 SNS에 올리자 친구들은 죄다 '발칸반도에 전쟁났냐'며 재미도 없고 의미도 없는 드립을 날렸다. 그만큼 피란이라는 도시는 낯설었다. 나도 사실 반쯤은 이름이 웃겨서 선택한 것이었다. 류블랴나에서 크로아티아의 로빈으로 가기 위해서는 중간에 한번 찍어주는게 좋은 동네 정도의 의미였다. 인터넷을 뒤져보니 그럭저럭 모양새도 예쁜 것 같았고, 마침 직행 버도 있었다. 그렇게 나는 피란으로 갔고, 크로아티아의 무자비한 동절기 버스 스케줄에 말려 예정과는 달리 3일이나 머물게 되었다. <br><br>그리고, 지금은 이 동네를 유럽 전체에서 가장 애정하는 곳 1순위로 꼽고 있다.</p></div></div></div></div></div></div> 0px;">피란은 그다지 특별할 것 없는 동네다. 개인적으로 가장 특이하게 여기는 건 여기가 크로아티아 땅이 아니라 슬로베니아라는 것. 피란이 자리한 이스트라 반도는 발칸반도 북쪽 이탈리아와 맞닿은 지점에 혹처럼 불쑥 나와있는 반도인데, 대부분이 크로아티아의 영토이고 아주 일부만 슬로베니아가 차지하고 있다. 피란에서 몇십킬로 남쪽에서 바로 국경이 시작된다. <br><br>역사나 특산물, 건축물 등으로 분해해서 보면, 진짜로, 정말, 하나도, 안특별하다. 유명한 바이올리니스트 누군가의 출생지라고는 하는데, 누군지 모르겠다. 역사를 봐도 다른 발칸반도의 작은 도시처럼 여기저기 휩쓸리고 부대끼던 신산한 세월들이라는 정도. 다이빙이나 낚시등 해양레포츠가 좀 유명하다지만 사실 그건 아드리아 해 일대의 휴양 도시들이 다 그렇다.  <br><br>그래서 나는 이 마을이 더 좋았던 것 같다. 위대한 역사와 대단한 볼거리와 할거리, 눈 돌아가는 특산품으로 치장한 수많은 잘난 도시들이 묵직한 강박관념이 되어가던 도중, 피란은 0칼로리 솔비톨 사탕처럼 시원한 휴식이 되어주었다. 여행에 지친 여행자를 위로하는 것도 결국은 여행이다. 피란은 내게 그런 여행이 되어준 곳이다. <br><br>그리고 특별함이 없다는 건 좀 억지로 갖다붙인 감이 없지 않다. 지금은 전망대로 쓰이는 옛 성벽에서 바라보는 피란 구시가의 전망 만큼 특별한 풍경이 유럽 천지에 또 있지 않으니까. 바다를 향해 당돌하게 불쑥 내민 마을의 풍경. 이것 하나만으로도 피란을 방문할 가치는 충분하다. 거기에 바다에 노을까지 내려준다면 계탄걸로 보셔도
