여성에게도 인권이 있다는 사실을 본격적으로 알렸다고 한다. 이후 참여연대를 결성해 소액주주운동, 낙천낙선운동 등을 통해 새로운 문화를 만들어갔고, 아름다운 재단을 설립해 1% 나눔 운동으로 새로운 기부 문화를 도입했다. 시민들과 생활용품을 공유하는 '아름다운 가게', 시민들의 아이디어를 현실화하는 '희망제작소', 공정무역 커피회사 '아름다운 커피' 등도
