Increased levels of radioactive ruthenium indicate an accident at the Russian nuclear power plant Mayak - but Moscow denies. Heinz Smital, atomic expert of Greenpeace.


All facts speak for a nuclear accident in the Russian nuclear facility Mayak. But the Russian authorities deny him. Heinz Smital, Greenpeace expert on nuclear energy, calls this approach "irresponsible" in the interview.

It is a fatal reminder of the Chernobyl disaster: European monitoring stations report increased radioactive radiation, apparently from Russia, from the southern Urals. But Moscow denies every possible accident. No atomic power station has exploded this time, but after all, the denied nuclear accident for the people in the region around the nuclear plant Majak is quite health concern. Cover up is irresponsible, says Heinz Smital, Greenpeace expert on nuclear energy, in an interview.

Greenpeace: At the end of September and the beginning of October, elevated ruthenium levels were measured in Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and France. Even at that time, the Federal Office for Radiation Protection suspected an accident in the southern Urals. But the Russian state energy giant Rosatom has denied any accident. What happened?

Heinz Smital: We certainly do not know, but there is every reason to believe that there has been an accident in the Russian nuclear center Mayak. Maybe a container in the reprocessing plant broke down. Or there was an accident in parts of the nuclear facility that produce radioactive substances for medicine. It is clear that something must have happened there. 

<For now the Russian Meteorological Service has announced that at the measuring station in Argajash, a village in the southern Urals, from 25th September to 7th October a concentration of radioactive ruthenium 106 has been measured, which is 986 times that of Russia allowed value. >


And the only plausible explanation for this is an accident in the nuclear complex Mayak 30 kilometers away.

Is that a dangerous radiation?

For the people in the region, the burden of breathing air with an almost thousandfold increased radioactive substance is quite questionable. In what way exactly, but I can not assess. There is no health risk for us here. Because even the highest values ​​measured in Görlitz in Germany are below the risk limit.

How is the behavior of the Russian authorities to be assessed?

It is absolutely irresponsible how the Russian authorities behave. Covering up nuclear accidents is a criminal offense because it does not take necessary protective measures for the population. That's why Greenpeace has now also turned on the Russian public prosecutor's office to investigate the possible concealment of a nuclear accident. From Rosatom we expect a thorough investigation and, above all, that the results will also be published.

How do you know that nothing worse has happened, such as an accident in a nuclear power plant in the Majak area?
